To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the theatrical animation "GHOST IN THE SHELL" (1995), it has been announced that the first cross-series "GHOST IN THE SHELL" exhibition will be held in Tokyo in 2026! Alongside this announcement, the teaser visual for this largest-ever exhibition was also revealed.
"GHOST IN THE SHELL" is a science fiction work that began serialization in 1989 by manga artist Masamune Shirow in the youth manga magazine "Young Magazine Kaizokuban" issue No.5. The story depicts Motoko Kusanagi, a full-body cyborg with excellent abilities in cyber warfare and combat, who leads the assault team "Ghost in the Shell" and confronts increasingly complex heinous crimes.
With realistic and precise illustrations, the series explores cyberpunk elements and philosophical themes, deeply contemplating the fusion of humans and technology, individual identity, and has influenced many creators.
The exhibition showcases everything from Masamune Shirow's original manga "GHOST IN THE SHELL," the 1995 theatrical animation directed by Mamoru Oshii, the 2002 TV animation "GHOST IN THE SHELL: STAND ALONE COMPLEX" directed by Kenji Kamiyama, the 2004 theatrical animation "INNOCENCE," which celebrated its 20th anniversary last year, the 2013 OVA "GHOST IN THE SHELL ARISE" with Kazuya Kise as the chief director, the 2020 streaming animation "GHOST IN THE SHELL SAC_2045" co-directed by Kenji Kamiyama and Shinji Aramaki, to the new TV anime production by Science SARU scheduled to air in 2026.
This will be the first time an exhibition will cross all anime series of "GHOST IN THE SHELL," which has continued for 30 years. With full cooperation from Production I.G, which has been involved in the animation production of past works, and Science SARU, responsible for the new anime set to air in 2026, this exhibition is sure to be a must-see for "GHOST IN THE SHELL" fans and newcomers alike.
Moreover, the released teaser visual impressively features the anime original artwork of Motoko Kusanagi from "GHOST IN THE SHELL," interspersed with iconic scenes from the various anime series.
