Even the powerful magician who defeated the demon king can get flustered, saying "But it's embarrassing..."! Let's take another look at Frieren's adorable gestures, which left her apprentice Fern exasperated, "Is this really the time to be saying that?"
The anime "Frieren: Beyond Journey's End" currently being broadcast in one go, is based on the original manga of the same name by Yamada Kanehito and Abe Tsukasa, serialized in "Weekly Shonen Sunday." Set in the world "after" the Demon King was defeated, it tells the story of Frieren (CV: Atsumi Tanezaki), an elf magician who has lived for over 1,000 years, traveling to "understand humans" with her apprentice Fern (CV: Kana Ichinose) and warrior Stark (CV: Chiaki Kobayashi).
The original comic series, which has won numerous awards and received overwhelming support and praise, has sold over 22 million copies to date with 13 volumes. The TV anime, which aired from September 2023 to March 2024, was a huge hit, with several related words trending on X (formerly Twitter) after each episode. The production of the second season has also been announced.
A group of 18 mages, including Frieren, were attempting the second phase of the First-Class Mage Selection Exam. Their task was to conquer the dungeon known as the "Tomb of the Fallen King." As they reached the deepest part of the dungeon, they faced their final challenge: replicas of themselves. To complete the task, each mage had to defeat a duplicate that perfectly mirrored their own magical power and skills, which also meant defeating a replica of Frieren.
While the other candidates despaired upon realizing the strength of Frieren, only Fern spoke up, saying, "We might have a chance." She was confident because she had realized something upon hearing that the replicas were precise imitations of the originals. When asked by Frieren about the weakness she had identified, Fern responded by launching a surprise magical attack. Frieren defended herself, and Fern asked everyone, "Did you notice?"
The fatal flaw that Fern had uncovered was that "the detection of magical power momentarily halts when Frieren casts a spell." This was a mistake commonly made by apprentice-level mages. Frieren admitted, "I've always been bad at it," without any embarrassment. However, when Fern pressed her, asking, "If you were aware of it, why didn't you tell us?" Frieren bashfully replied, "Because it's embarrassing..." Fern could only sigh at her master, saying, "Is this really the time to be saying such things?"
When this scene aired, viewers responded with comments like "Embarrassed Frieren is so cute... lol," "Adorable," and "It's embarrassing, you know?" reflecting the widespread affection for the character.
