Expressing Frieren's Awkwardness and Emotions: What is the Underlying Character Interpretation in Cosplay?

At the "acosta!@Ikebukuro Sunshine City" event held on January 25-26, 2025, we featured a photo of Madolce, who participated in cosplay as Frieren from "Frieren: Beyond Journey's End". We also interviewed her about the highlights of her cosplay and what she would like to try in the future.

——What motivated you to cosplay as Frieren from "Frieren: Beyond Journey's End" this time?

Madolce: A friend invited me, which was the catalyst. At a previous acosta! event, I cosplayed as Himmel, so this time I decided to take on the challenge of cosplaying as Frieren.

——Both the comic and anime of "Frieren: Beyond Journey's End" are popular. How did you come across the work, and what aspects do you find appealing?

Madolce: "Frieren: Beyond Journey's End" is one of my favorite works. I was moved by Frieren's growth as she learns from the important people around her. I especially love the episodes between Frieren and Himmel, and I was deeply touched when I learned the flower language of the pattern on the ring Himmel gave to Frieren.

I would be delighted if I could express Frieren's clumsiness and feelings even a little through my cosplay.

——What aspects did you want to express in this cosplay, and what points are you particularly satisfied with?

Madolce: The aspect I struggled with the most in expressing Frieren was the color of the wig. Some cosplayers use white or silver hair, but I thought it was a pinkish color close to white, so I had a hard time finding a color that matched my interpretation.

Additionally, since Frieren is a character who is indifferent to her appearance, I practiced to achieve a natural makeup look and was conscious of not making my demeanor overly feminine.

— Could you share any upcoming activities or cosplay projects you're interested in pursuing?

Madolce: This year, I want to take on 'NIKKE' and 'JoJo'. Both series require me to change my physique, so I’m working hard on body transformation! I often participate in events like "acosta!@Ikebukuro Sunshine City" and other cosplay events, so if you see me, please feel free to say hi!
