"I Thought I'd Enjoy It in My Own Way as a Middle-Aged Woman" - An Intense Love for Tanya from 'The Saga of Tanya the Evil' Showcased Through Cosplay!

On January 25-26, 2025, the event "acosta!@Ikebukuro Sunshine City" took place. We featured photos of hal, who participated in cosplay as Tanya von Degurechaff from 'The Saga of Tanya the Evil,' and conducted an interview to discuss the highlights of the cosplay and other characters she would like to cosplay in the future.

--What inspired you to cosplay as Tanya von Degurechaff from 'The Saga of Tanya the Evil'?

hal: I got hooked on 'The Saga of Tanya the Evil' through the anime. I am a professional manga artist, so I have been creating fan art and manga for a long time. But I wanted to express my love through cosplay as well, and that's how it all started.

I am somewhat of an older woman and not particularly beautiful, so I used to suppress the thought, wondering if it was okay for me to do it. But I thought I'd enjoy it in my own way as a middle-aged woman (laughs).

--I heard you cosplayed quite a while ago. Do you have a long history with cosplay?

hal: Not really. I was invited by a friend to try it when I was younger and did it for a few years. However, life got busy with work and childbirth, so I stopped. It was in July last year when I decided to take the plunge and start again, about 20 years since my last cosplay.

--I see. By the way, what characters did you cosplay back then?

hal: Initially, I cosplayed as Suigintou from 'Rozen Maiden' and characters from 'Sailor Moon.'

--What aspects did you want to express or focus on with this cosplay?

hal: I love Tanya-chan so much and have been involved in doujin activities for 'The Saga of Tanya the Evil' for seven years. Initially, I bought ready-made costumes, but I was dissatisfied with the length of the hem and other details, so I made everything myself. I couldn't find any covered-buttons I liked, so I made those too.
I adore Tanya-chan's powerful eyes and want to be able to express that aspect.

--Do you have any future goals or other cosplays you would like to try?

hal: I love Tanya-chan so much that I don't feel like cosplaying anyone else. My future goal is to complete every outfit Tanya-chan wears in the books, manga adaptations, and anime.

The military uniforms differ slightly in the books and manga, and naturally, there are no ready-made products available, so I plan to make everything myself. There are also dresses she wears, and I intend to make those as well.
