"The Summer Hikaru Died" (abbreviated as "Hikanatsu") is based on the coming-of-age horror manga by Mokumokuren, currently serialized on the manga website "Young Ace UP" (KADOKAWA). The story interweaves the restlessness of youth with elements of fear.

The anime depicts the ordinary high school boy Yoshiki Tsujinaka as he experiences a series of mysterious and bizarre incidents after beginning to live with an enigmatic "something" that imitates his childhood friend Hikaru Indou.
