Production Materials from The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, and More Gathered! Director Mamoru Hosoda's Exhibition Opens June 20

Commemorating the 20th anniversary of the release of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, "Mamoru Hosoda's Origins / Exhibition", where visitors can experience the visual world of animation film director Mamoru Hosoda through the largest collection of creative materials to date, will be held at CREATIVE MUSEUM TOKYO (Kyobashi, Tokyo). The exhibition will run from Saturday, June 20 to Monday, August 31.

Adapting Yasutaka Tsutsui's original novel The Girl Who Leapt Through Time into a relatable coming-of-age story of a girl living in the modern day, the film captured the hearts of many audiences with its dynamic animation. Despite starting in only 6 theaters in July 2006, positive word-of-mouth led to a record-breaking 40-week long run. The number of screening theaters expanded to over 100 locations, and the film received acclaim at numerous international awards, including a Special Distinction in the Feature Film category at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, making Director Hosoda's name known worldwide.

This exhibition will feature the largest-ever display of production materials, including storyboards, layouts, key animation drawings, and background art boards, centering on The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, and Wolf Children—works that continue to gain new fans to this day. The contents allow visitors to discover these works, which can be called the origin of Director Hosoda, from a new perspective and experience the emotion of those summers all over again.

Director Hosoda continues to create highly entertaining works while boldly incorporating influences from animation, live-action films, and paintings into his visual direction. This exhibition explores his exceptional direction of visual worlds, as well as the thematic depth and universality as a creator that continues all the way to his challenge in The Endless Scarlet.
