An illustration of Marie Antoinette from Shin-ichi Sakamoto's manga "Innocent Rouge" has been created as a collotype print and will be exhibited and sold at the Shueisha Manga Art Heritage Tokyo Gallery in Azabudai Hills, Tokyo. The exhibition period is from April 28 to June 28.
"Innocent" and "Innocent Rouge" are works set in 18th-century Paris during the French Revolution, depicting Charles-Henri Sanson, the executioner who oversaw the beheading of King Louis XVI, and his younger sister, Marie-Joseph Sanson. Sakamoto works fully digitally, and his intricate details—such as braided hair, delicate lace, and sparkling accessories—have amazed readers both in Japan and abroad, with comments like "incredible artistic skill" and "Is this manga? Or a painting?" Furthermore, the lines of the characters' faces are given a soft nuance through a technique where lines once drawn are erased and blurred with extremely fine lines.
The scene adapted into an artwork this time depicts Marie Antoinette, who has been partying all night at the Palace of Versailles and is sleeping on the floor with the nobles. It was printed in monochrome double-tone at the workshop of Benrido (Kyoto), a company founded in the Meiji era, using "collotype," considered the oldest practical photomechanical printing technique. The paper used is "PUR COTON COCAINE" from the French company Zuber Rieder, and the finished size is 574mm x 400mm.
Additionally, for the exhibition, the world of the work is recreated in the gallery space by combining the scene with roses, playing cards, and glasses scattered on the floor, along with fantastical red and pink lighting.
