"The Super Mario Galaxy Movie," which opened nationwide on Friday, April 24, has surpassed a cumulative box office revenue of 7 billion yen and 5 million admissions. It continues to break box office records for foreign films released in the 2026 fiscal year.
This film is the second animated installment based on the "Super Mario" world, following "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," which grossed over $1.3 billion (approximately 200 billion yen) worldwide in 2023. Continuing from the previous film, it is co-produced by Chris Meledandri of Illumination and Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo, and was co-financed and produced by Universal Pictures and Nintendo.
In its sixth week of release, the film grossed 205,436,210 yen over the three-day weekend from Friday, May 29 to Sunday, May 31. This brings its cumulative box office revenue to 7,136,840,950 yen, successfully crossing the 7 billion yen milestone. Furthermore, the cumulative attendance has reached 5,183,072, also surpassing the 5 million mark.
Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, who return from the previous film, expectations are high for the movie to further shatter records in Japan.
