HOSHiN ENGi Re:surrection, a new roguelite action game marking the 30th anniversary of the serialization of the manga Hoshin Engi, was unveiled for the first time during the "Nintendo Direct 2026.9.9" broadcast on September 9, sparking a huge reaction on social media with comments like "there's no choice but to play it." The game is set for release in 2027 and will be available on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Steam.

This title, brought to players by Shueisha Games, depicts the aftermath of Hoshin Engi, the Chinese-mythology fantasy manga that has sold over 22 million copies, and is a completely new work. With a new character drawn especially for this game by original creator Ryu Fujisaki serving as the protagonist, a new adventure unfolds. Players will control Toshin, the new protagonist who has become a disciple of Taikobo, alongside his straight-man sidekick, the guardian spirit Chuchue Doji, as they confront a new threat baring its fangs in a human world that was believed to be at peace. Fujisaki shared an enthusiastic comment: "A new adventure depicting what comes after the manga is about to begin."

The game also features familiar characters from the original manga, including Taikobo, Supushan, Yozen, Nataku, and Tenka Ko. By deepening bonds with them through conversations at the home base and exchanges in the dungeons, players can gain various forms of support. It's also possible to fight them at times under the guise of training, and winning is said to bring even better rewards. Being able to enjoy a new story alongside these beloved characters is another highlight of the game.

In battle, the key lies in deep tactics built around freely combining the Main Paope, which forms the core of attacks, with the Sub Paope, which can change the flow of a fight. The companion guardian spirit not only provides automatic support on the ground but can also be ridden, enabling exclusive ride actions such as aerial movement and striking at enemies' blind spots. The dungeons follow a roguelite format that changes with every attempt, and every choice a player makes, from selecting routes to strengthening their character at the home base, shapes how the run unfolds.

Following the announcement of this completely new game based on a beloved long-running classic, social media was flooded with joyful reactions such as "I've reread it so many times I've lost count, and I was just rereading it again recently, I'm so excited!" and "Wait, seriously? There's no choice but to play it." Comments like "The new artwork is beautiful too!" and "Being able to experience the continuation of Hoshin Engi in this day and age is the best" further show that anticipation for being able to experience the world after the manga's story firsthand has reached its peak.
