To continue writing names in the Death Note even under surveillance, Light devises an unexpected camouflage using potato chips. After dinner, with the plausible excuse of needing a snack for late-night study, he returns to his room with a bag of chips.
Light turns the knowledge that "Kira can manipulate the time of death"—information known to L—against him. He deduces that if a recently reported criminal dies while he is in a situation where he cannot obtain any external information, such as while studying for exams, it will clear him of suspicion.
The trick Light sets up involves hiding a portable TV and a piece of the Death Note inside the bag of potato chips. While solving equations with his right hand, he writes down the names of criminals with his left hand and then eats the chips, all in a natural manner.
From the surveillance cameras, it appears as though Light is simply studying for exams while snacking on potato chips. When a criminal, whom Light should have no way of knowing about without watching the news, dies by Kira's hand, L is left wide-eyed, concluding, "The Yagami family is surprisingly innocent."
