The anime "Mobile Suit Gundam," directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino and produced by Sunrise, aired from April 1979 to January 1980. It pioneered the new genre of "real robot anime" and had a significant influence on subsequent robot anime. Although ratings were lackluster during its original broadcast, the series gained popularity with reruns and the release of theater versions, sparking a "Gunpla" boom. Numerous sequels, spin-offs, and derivative works have since been produced, maintaining high popularity. A new anime, "Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX" is set to air starting April 2025.
