“Chiikawa,” a popular manga series by illustrator Nagano that began serialization on X (formerly Twitter) in 2020, won the Grand Prix at the Japan Character Awards 2022 and again at the Japan Character Awards 2024, announced in July 2024. The contrast between its tiny, cute characters and its harsh world view has earned it widespread popularity among both adults and children, with followers surpassing 3.95 million to date.
The Chiikawa anime currently airs on Fuji TV’s Mezamashi TV every Tuesday and Friday around 7:40 a.m. From April 2025, there will be a roughly three-month hiatus for new episodes, with reruns of especially popular episodes to be broadcast instead. Additionally, the first Chiikawa smartphone app, “Chiikawa Pocket,” was released on March 27, launching its service in 43 countries and regions including Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the United States. Download numbers have exceeded 3 million.
