Meanwhile, the official X (formerly Twitter) account of Studio Khara, which is handling production for “Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX,” shared behind-the-scenes stories following the episode’s broadcast. According to a statement from company president Hideaki Anno, “For the amphibious mobile suits that appear near the end, I felt it would be better if there were traces of underwater work visible on screen, and since they were only floating among the waves, there wasn’t any need to design them below the shoulders, which lessened the burden on the team. Therefore, I requested Director Tsurumaki to have them make an appearance.” He also expressed hopes for the group’s further involvement, saying, “I’d like them to play a bigger role.”
“Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX” is the newest entry in the “Mobile Suit Gundam” franchise, which has continued since 1979. The story follows Amate Yuzuriha (voiced by Tomoyo Kurosawa), a high-school girl living peacefully in a space colony, whose fateful encounter with the mysterious girl Nyaan (voiced by Yui Ishikawa) draws her into the illegal mobile suit dueling competition known as “Clan Battle.” Jointly produced by Studio Khara—best known for the “Rebuild of Evangelion” series—and Sunrise, the series has garnered considerable attention. The advance theatrical release, which was shown prior to the TV broadcast this January, became a huge hit with box office earnings of about 3.4 billion yen. It has also been announced that the film will have a nationwide re-release in 368 theaters starting June 20.
