Despite its monotone delivery, the words carry an inexplicably heavy weight. In episode 3 of the anime “Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX,” a phrase spoken by Shūji Itō (voiced by Shimba Tsuchiya) instantly became a viral internet meme: “Fight, said Gundam.”
Shūji, the pilot of the red Gundam who made his full-fledged appearance from episode 3, delivered this single line—a unique blend of a strangely catchy sound and a subtle ambiguity that makes it hard to tell whether it holds real meaning or not. This mixture quickly captivated viewers, who began using it online almost immediately.
On social media, reactions such as “This is Japanese I just want to say out loud,” “It’s far too versatile,” and “Everything can be expressed with this” appeared in abundance. Before long, the “~, said Gundam” line was being referred to as the “Shūji Sentence Structure.”
In the original context of episode 3, Shūji loses all his savings right before a deal with Nyaan. Machu then suggests he participate in the illegal mobile suit duel tournament, “Clan Battle.” When Shūji quietly leads Machu to the hiding place of the red Gundam, he softly utters, “Fight, said Gundam.”
Nobody really knows in what sense “Gundam is saying” such a thing, but both Machu and the viewers inexplicably accept its “rightness.” This is the mysterious charm of this sentence structure.
