The line “Someday you’ll reach the point of purging humanity living on Earth” is an oddly specific vision of the future, and many Gundam fans were instantly reminded of the 1988 film “Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack.” In that film, Char, as the leader of Neo Zeon, attempts to drop an asteroid on Earth to purge humanity living there.

Challia’s lines strongly reminiscent of “Char’s Counterattack” sparked a wave of reactions online, with comments such as “He definitely watched Char’s Counterattack,” “That’s exactly right (Char’s Counterattack),” and “Challia Bull really was Char’s greatest understanding companion.”

“Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX” is the latest installment in the Mobile Suit Gundam series, which began in 1979. The story follows high school girl Amate Yuzuriha (voiced by Tomoyo Kurosawa), who lives peacefully in a space colony, but gets drawn into the illegal mobile suit dueling game known as Clan Battle after she meets the mysterious girl Nyaan (voiced by Yui Ishikawa). The joint production by Studio Khara, known for the Evangelion: New Theatrical Edition series, and Sunrise has generated much buzz, and the theatrical advance release, which premiered in January this year ahead of the TV series, was a major hit, earning around 3.4 billion yen at the box office. It is currently being re-released in 368 theaters nationwide starting June 20.
