The storyline was as shocking as the ending. As the space distorted due to Zeknova and the time freeze of Sharon's Rose was lifted, the original Gundam, RX-78-2, appeared. This mobile suit, said to have come from the other world, left viewers in an uproar. Comments like "Is the original Gundam the final boss?!!!" and "Is it okay to end it like this?!" nearly sent the internet into a frenzy.
The playing of "BEYOND THE TIME" felt more like a declaration than an insert song. Additionally, a post from the official Color X stating "Those guys did it!!" with a comment from Hideaki Anno further fueled posts like "The history of Gundam is changing" and "Are they ending Gundam?!"
Moreover, the distribution jacket for "BEYOND THE TIME -2025 Version-" and "BEYOND THE TIME (Mevius no Uchu wo Koete) -2025 Short Edit-," which started streaming at midnight on June 18, quietly drew attention for featuring visuals of Amuro and Char by Yasuomi Umetsu, originally used in 1988.
The appearance of the original Gundam, together with "BEYOND THE TIME," felt like a decisive blow announcing the "end" of Gundam's canonical history in the world of GQuuuuuuX.
"Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX" is the latest installment in the "Mobile Suit Gundam" series that has continued since 1979. It follows the story of Amate Yuzuriha (voiced by Tomoyo Kurosawa), a high school girl living peacefully in a space colony, who gets drawn into illegal mobile suit duel competitions called "Clan Battle" after meeting a girl named Nyaan (voiced by Yui Ishikawa). The joint production by Studio Khara, known for the "Rebuild of Evangelion" series, and Sunrise has attracted attention, and the theatrical preview version released in January this year was a big hit, recording approximately 3.4 billion yen in box office revenue. It has been re-released in 368 theaters nationwide from June 20.
