“Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX” is the latest installment in the “Mobile Suit Gundam” series that began in 1979. The story follows a high school girl, Amate Yuzuriha (voiced by Tomoyo Kurosawa), who lives peacefully in a space colony, but gets drawn into illegal mobile suit duels known as “Clan Battles” after a chance encounter with a mysterious girl, Nyaan (voiced by Yui Ishikawa).

The co-production by Studio Khara, known for the “Rebuild of Evangelion” film series, and Sunrise generated much buzz. The theatrical pre-release, which came out ahead of the TV series in January this year, became a massive hit with approximately 3.4 billion yen in box office revenue. It has been re-released in 368 theaters nationwide as of June 20.
