The atmosphere froze in an instant... “The Apothecary Diaries”: Jinshi steps on Maomao’s landmine and is filled with regret

In episode 18 of the anime “The Apothecary Diaries,” Maomao (voiced by Aoi Yūki), who is usually dry and nonchalant, displayed an intense hatred that even made Jinshi (voiced by Takeo Ōtsuka) recoil. This happened the moment Jinshi touched upon Maomao’s “taboo.”

Lakan (voiced by Takuya Kirimoto), a high-ranking official who oversees the military, is Maomao’s biological father, but for certain reasons, he is despised by his daughter. In episode 18, Lakan, who tends to get involved with Jinshi, asks him, “Would you inform her that I plan to come visit my daughter soon?”

Jinshi broaches the subject with Maomao, saying, “There’s an official who wants to meet you,” but the moment Jinshi mentions Lakan’s name, Maomao does not respond. For just an instant, however, her face is contorted with intense hatred… With her icy glare and an expression that seemed to completely reject him, all Jinshi could manage was, “I’ll try to turn him down somehow.”

Afterwards, Maomao immediately returned to her usual calm demeanor, but Jinshi was left bewildered, muttering, “That’s the first time I’ve seen that expression… I never want to see it again.”
