Later, this Psycho Gundam runs wild and wreaks havoc throughout the city, but if customs had stopped it from entering the colony in episode 6, the disaster could have been avoided. Viewers responded to the customs officer’s major mistake with comments like, “That customs guy is the real culprit,” “How blind can you be?” and “You can see it… Psycho Gundam is right there.”
Incidentally, a similar bespectacled male officer appeared in the 1989 OVA “Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket,” who, in that story, also lets a mobile suit slip through in the cargo by mistake. Whether it’s the same character is unclear, but some Gundam fans recognized the reference and grinned knowingly.
“Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX” is the latest installment in the “Mobile Suit Gundam” series, which began in 1979. The story follows high school girl Amate Yuzuriha (voiced by Tomoyo Kurosawa), who leads a peaceful life in a space colony. After meeting a mysterious girl named Nyaan (voiced by Yui Ishikawa), Amate becomes embroiled in the illegal mobile suit dueling competition known as Clam Battle.
The joint production between Studio Khara, known for the “Rebuild of Evangelion” series, and Sunrise generated great buzz, and the theatrical preview version released this January was a blockbuster hit, earning about 3.4 billion yen at the box office. Even after the 12-episode TV run concluded in June of the same year, new merchandise has continued to be released, and an original soundtrack is scheduled for release on August 27, maintaining the show’s high popularity. In July, a special event was also held at Anime Expo 2025, North America’s largest anime convention in Los Angeles.
