“Delicious! Delicious! Delicious!” The Reason Why Rengoku Ate So Many Bento Boxes on the Mugen Train in “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba”

Many people remember the scene where Kyojuro Rengoku, the cheerful Flame Hashira (voiced by Satoshi Hino), repeatedly exclaims “Delicious!” while eating bento boxes. In the first episode of the TV anime version “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Mugen Train Arc,” which includes an all-new episode, a backstory is revealed that explains why Rengoku was eating so many bento boxes.

The TV anime version “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Mugen Train Arc” is a re-edited work based on the 2020 film “Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train,” with new episodes and additional footage. The first episode of the TV anime version depicts events before Rengoku boards the Mugen Train.

Rengoku saves Tomi (voiced by Kikuko Inoue), an elderly woman who sells bento boxes at the station, and her granddaughter Fuku (voiced by Inori Minase) when they are attacked by a demon. Out of gratitude, Tomi and Fuku present Rengoku with a bento box. When he is told that he does not need to pay, Rengoku responds, “Then I’ll accept this, and I’ll buy all of the ones over there!” and purchases a large number of bento boxes. This is why, when Rengoku later meets up with Tanjirō Kamado (voiced by Natsuki Hanae) and the others, he is seen eating one bento after another, exclaiming, “Delicious! Delicious! Delicious!”
