Disney Animation's latest film 'Zootopia 2' was released in Japan on December 5th and recorded an opening day box office revenue of 412.67 million yen. Surpassing films such as 'Frozen 2' and 'Toy Story 4' released in 2019, it achieved the all-time No.1 opening record for Friday-released foreign animated films and the all-time No.1 in Disney Animation history.
Furthermore, since 'Frozen 2,' which this film surpassed in opening day box office revenue, achieved a domestic box office of over 13.36 billion yen, 'Zootopia 2' is also expected to break through the 10 billion yen box office milestone.
Over the following three-day opening period (December 5th-7th), the film reached an attendance of 1,313,347 people and box office revenue of 1.891 billion yen, securing the No.1 position in both weekend box office and attendance upon its debut. Compared to the previous film 'Zootopia's' weekend box office of 440 million yen, this represents a start of over 429%. The audience demographic was broad, including women in their teens to twenties, families, and couples, with many theatergoers seen carrying character merchandise.
This film is set in the paradise of "Zootopia," where animals live like humans, and follows the story of Judy, a rabbit police officer, and Nick, a fox, who team up again as buddies to uncover "surprising secrets" hidden in the city. Overseas, the film recorded approximately 556 million dollars in its opening five-day week, establishing the world's all-time No.1 opening for animated films. The worldwide box office has already surpassed 900 million dollars, and the film has received high ratings on various review sites. In Japan as well, positive reactions have spread primarily through social media, with Filmarks recording a score of 4.3 out of 5 points (as of December 8th).
In response to the success in Japan, as the second wave of admission gifts, a promotional card from Disney Lorcana Trading Card Game titled "Connect the Dots and Lines" will be distributed in limited quantities starting December 13th. The card features a 'Zootopia 2' design with a visual of Judy and Nick chasing the new character Gary.
