The official X account for the "Frieren: Beyond Journey's End" anime has released a support illustration by Kotoyama, the creator of "Call of the Night," sparking significant discussion.
The released illustration depicts Frieren (CV: Atsumi Tanezaki) drawn in Kotoyama's distinctive style. She sits with a slightly listless expression, one hand placed near her mouth while hugging her knees. Alongside the illustration are the words "Commemorating Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Anime Season 2 Broadcast" and a handwritten message that reads, "I honestly love Frieren-sama the most... Kotoyama," creating a piece that brings out her mysterious and mature charm.
"Frieren: Beyond Journey's End" is an anime adaptation based on the manga of the same name by Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe. Set in a world after the Demon King has been defeated, it emotionally depicts the journey of Frieren, an elf mage, as she embarks on a "journey to understand human hearts" following the death of her former companions. Additionally, Kotoyama's representative work "Call of the Night" enjoys great popularity as a nocturnal coming-of-age ensemble drama featuring an insomniac middle school student and a vampire girl, making this a spectacular collaboration between popular manga creators.
In response to this post, comments from fans flooded in. Some fans posted panels from the series where Fern (CV: Kana Ichinose), Frieren's apprentice, asks "Did you stay up late?" - a reference to Kotoyama's signature work. Others appeared with comments like "Frieren with such a mature woman's expression is wonderful. I think this would definitely strike Sein's heart too," accompanied by a panel of the priest Sein (CV: Yuichi Nakamura), who has a thing for older women, shouting "Sexy, mature women, I tell you!!" Reactions like "She's a mature woman that even Sein would acknowledge!" showed excitement that transcended the boundaries between works.
