The worldwide cumulative box office revenue for the movie The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which opens nationwide on Friday, April 24, has surpassed $700 million (approximately 118.8 billion yen). It has also secured the top spot at the North American weekend box office for three consecutive weeks.
Released in numerous regions starting April 1 prior to Japan, the film recorded $35 million in North American box office revenue over the three-day weekend from April 17 to 19. International (outside the U.S.) performance continues to trend strongly, with worldwide cumulative earnings reaching $747,477,060 (approximately 118,848,850,000 yen), continuing to break records for films released this year.
This is the second animated feature following The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which was released in 2023 and recorded approximately $1.3 billion in worldwide cumulative box office revenue. Following the previous film, Chris Meledandri of Illumination and Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo serve as co-producers, with Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic directing the film.
The story follows twin plumbers Mario and Luigi, living in the Mushroom Kingdom, as they encounter their new partner Yoshi. They embark on an adventurous journey into space to stop Bowser Jr.'s ambitions and protect Rosalina.
