Released across Japan on April 24, the film The Super Mario Galaxy Movie recorded a box office revenue of 1,601,093,600 yen in its first three days (April 24–26). It made a stellar start, ranking No. 1 at the weekend box office and becoming the top-opening foreign film of 2026.

The film had an early release in many overseas regions starting April 1, and its cumulative global box office has already reached $831,474,150, surpassing the $800 million mark. In North America, it set a new record for 2026 releases by reaching a cumulative $386,493,150 in its fourth week, while the international cumulative total has also exceeded $444,981,000, making it a historic hit both at home and abroad.

This film is the second in the series, following the animated film The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which was released in 2023 and earned over $1.3 billion (approx. 200 billion yen) worldwide. It was produced through a joint venture between Universal Pictures and Nintendo.

Just as with the previous film, Chris Meledandri of Illumination and Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo serve as co-producers. The creative team also returns, including directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, screenwriter Matthew Fogel, and composer Brian Tyler.

The story follows twins Mario and Luigi, who live as plumbers in the Mushroom Kingdom. After meeting their new companion Yoshi, they embark on an adventurous journey into space to thwart the ambitions of Bowser Jr. and protect Rosalina.
