The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which opened nationwide on Friday, April 24, has reclaimed the number one spot in the weekend box office rankings in Japan. Furthermore, its cumulative worldwide box office revenue has surpassed 964,148,015 dollars (approximately 153.24 billion yen), climbing to the number two spot of all time among films adapted from video games. Together with its predecessor, which holds the number one spot of all time, Mario movies have achieved the historic feat of monopolizing the top two positions in this genre.
This film is the second installment in the series, following The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which recorded a worldwide box office revenue of over 1.3 billion dollars (approximately 200 billion yen) in 2023. With Illumination's Chris Meledandri and Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto serving as co-producers, the film was co-financed and produced by Universal Pictures and Nintendo.
In Japan, now in its fourth week of release, the film mobilized 258,305 viewers over the three-day weekend from Friday, May 15 to Sunday, May 17, reclaiming the top spot in the national box office rankings. The cumulative number of viewers has reached 4,667,741, putting the milestone of 5 million viewers just around the corner. Its box office revenue as of Sunday, May 17, also recorded 6,436,820,000 yen, continuing to break records for foreign films released in 2026.
The film has also achieved historic success in overseas markets. On the worldwide stage, entering its ninth week of release, its cumulative global box office gross surpassed the record of the film A Minecraft Movie released in 2025 (960,387,780 dollars), climbing to second place of all time among films adapted from video games, as mentioned above (according to Box Office Mojo, provisional figures as of May 18).
Inheriting the enthusiasm of its predecessor, this film is once again taking the world by storm. Great expectations are mounting for it to surpass the milestone of 5 million viewers in Japan and cross the major 1-billion-dollar mark in worldwide box office revenue.
