Where did the cool, handsome eunuch go...!? In the anime The Apothecary Diaries, Jinshi (VA: Takeo Ōtsuka) bares his jealousy while observing Maomao (VA: Aoi Yūki) and her companion from a distance, delightfully amusing fans with an aura so dark that he is barely recognizable.

Jinshi is a handsome eunuch who manages the rear palace. In front of the consorts and court ladies, he never drops his gentle and polite demeanor. However, ever since Maomao caught his interest, he frequently loses his composure around her. Whenever Maomao is involved, he occasionally reveals his childish, true self.

In Episode 19, Maomao was deep in conversation with military official Lihaku (VA: Kenji Akabane) about a series of frequent incidents and accidents. Impressed by Maomao's deductions, Lihaku laughed with total friendliness, saying, "You're smart despite your looks!" as he familiarly slapped her shoulder.

At that exact moment, an eerie voice came out of nowhere: "Looks like you're having fun..." It belonged to Jinshi, who was staring intently at their interaction from behind a pillar a short distance away. His usual dazzling beauty was nowhere to be seen, replaced by a gloomy, negative aura emanating from his entire body.

Accustomed to this behavior, Maomao flatly replied, "I'm not particularly having fun." Lihaku hurriedly ran away. Even after that, Jinshi remained somewhat moody, making sarcastic remarks to Maomao like, "You two seem quite close."

Seeing Jinshi transformed to the point of being unrecognizable had viewers bursting into laughter, leaving comments such as "This is pure horror lolololol," "Isn't he way too cute? lol," "Jinshi turning into a monster just because Maomao talks to another guy," and "This is so hilarious my stomach hurts."

The anime The Apothecary Diaries is based on the popular light novel of the same name by Hyuganatsu. It is a massive hit that has also been adapted into manga across two monthly magazines and an app. The mystery drama starring Maomao, who works as a food taster in the rear palace, along with the comical interactions between Maomao and Jinshi, gained immense popularity and generated significant buzz. The TV anime has aired up to Season 2, with Season 3 scheduled to air in split consecutive quarters starting in October 2026 and April 2027. Additionally, the series' first film, The Apothecary Diaries: The Movie - Bouhi no Hihou, is slated for release on December 11, 2026.
