Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man and Other MAPPA Works From Across the Years Come Together: MAPPA EXPO 15th Anniversary Report

The MAPPA EXPO 15th Anniversary exhibition has been running since September 16 at YURAKUCHO MUSEUM in Tokyo. Marking the 15th anniversary of MAPPA, the animation studio behind a wide range of titles, the exhibition brings together recent hits such as the film Chainsaw Man The Movie Reze Arc and the anime Jujutsu Kaisen alongside older works including In This Corner of the World and Kids on the Slope.

This report introduces the highlights of the exhibition, centered on photographs taken at the MAPPA EXPO 15th Anniversary press preview and opening event held ahead of the public opening.

Beyond the opening room, where footage from MAPPA works over the years plays, visitors can enjoy displays devoted to individual titles in the Various Stories area.

Titles such as Teekyu and Yuri!!! on ICE are introduced alongside production materials with a character all their own, making this an area worth taking time over.

The Attack on Titan The Final Season area is rich in production materials such as key animation, and a special display recreates the Rumbling set off by Eren through video and three-dimensional set pieces. Visitors can take in its overwhelming scale while also getting a glimpse of the art-making process in a section on how the landscape of that hill was created. Some of the displays will be swapped out between the first and second halves of the run, so fans will want to visit during both.

The Jujutsu Kaisen anime area features a substantial section that looks back on memorable scenes from the series with setting materials and key animation. The content on display is set to change between the first and second halves of the run: the first half covers season 1 and the film Jujutsu Kaisen 0, while the second half covers season 2, Hidden Inventory / Premature Death and the Shibuya Incident, and season 3, the first part of the Culling Game.

Among the three-dimensional displays, the ones to watch are Gojo's room and Yuji Itadori: Circling Memories, where a life-size figure sits in a train carriage as flashback footage plays.

The area for the film Chainsaw Man The Movie Reze Arc is likewise designed so that visitors can relive the story of the film alongside production materials. Striking three-dimensional displays such as the Phone Box of the Encounter and a life-size figure of Bomb bring various scenes close at hand. Here too, some of the displays will be swapped out between the first and second halves of the run.

The merchandise area offers a wide selection of goods featuring illustrations drawn especially for the exhibition, as well as corporate items such as T-shirts and hoodies bearing the MAPPA logo.

The exhibition lets visitors feel the life in the anime that MAPPA has produced over its 15-year history, so fans of individual titles and fans of MAPPA itself alike are encouraged to pay it a visit.
