“Can’t Take My Eyes Off Shimajiro’s Back”: New Visual for Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of the Mermaid Island Unveiled, with Usagi’s Gaze Also Drawing Plenty of Reactions

The second main visual for Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of the Mermaid Island has been unveiled on the film’s official X account and is generating buzz. The same post also announced that the third, fourth, and sixth installments of the theater-goer bonuses will be redistributed in a revival run within the year.

The released visual depicts the characters gathering beside a campfire under a sky full of stars. The tagline “Forever,” is placed on the left side, and Shimajiro is drawn from behind in the center background. In front of Shimajiro, Chiikawa (voiced by Haruka Aoki) and Hachiware (voiced by Makoto Tanaka) are holding hands. Usagi (voiced by Ari Ozawa) sits next to Shimajiro, looking back. In the direction of that gaze are Hitoha (voiced by Momoka Terasawa) and Futaba (voiced by Sayumi Suzushiro), in the composition of the visual.

In response to the post, fans have left comments such as “What a wonderful visual! And they’re redistributing the bonuses too, what a fantastic move” and “So that’s the moment the key visual shows... I’m tearing up all over again.” There are also many comments about Usagi’s expression in the visual, including “It’s a touching scene, but I can’t take my eyes off Shimajiro’s back...,” “So Usagi was watching at this moment!!” and “So right after this, Usagi must have run over to the two of them.”

Chiikawa is a popular manga that illustrator Nagano has been posting on X since 2020. It has won wide popularity among all ages, from adults to children, for the contrast between the “Something small and cute,” known as “Chiikawa,” and a harsh world that can sometimes be nerve-racking. The TV anime airs on programs including Fuji TV network’s Mezamashi TV, and the theatrical film Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of the Mermaid Island is now showing.

Starting Saturday, October 10, the sixth theater-goer bonus, a set of 2 Charm Mini Figures, will be distributed. The bonuses confirmed for revival distribution are the third installment, Gokigen Siren♪ (3 types in total), the fourth installment, Charm Mini Figures (4 types in total), and the sixth installment, with the distribution period set within the year.
