Shinn Asuka Is the Lead! Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO Set for Theatrical Release in January 2027, and Fans Cheer, 'This Is the Best, Damn It!'

Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO, the latest entry in the Mobile Suit Gundam SEED series, will hit theaters on January 15, 2027. With a teaser visual centered on Shinn Asuka and the latest trailer now released, the long-awaited news is drawing fans' attention.

This film is a prequel leading into Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM, which passed 3 million admissions and set a new box office record for a theatrical Gundam release. The film will bring to the screen a scenario written after SEED DESTINY aired, during the planning of SEED FREEDOM, by series composition writer Chiaki Morosawa, Shigeru Morita, and director Mitsuo Fukuda.

Kenichi Suzumura, who plays the lead Shinn Asuka, and Maaya Sakamoto, who voices Lunamaria Hawke, are joined by Soichiro Hoshi as Kira Yamato and Akira Ishida as Athrun Zala, with the series' familiar main cast reuniting. In addition, Daisuke Ono has been cast as Leonard Valway, a character who appeared in the bonus novel Moonlight Valkyrie for SEED FREEDOM and makes his first appearance in a visual work in this film.

Director Fukuda revealed that this is "the last work completed by my wife, series composition writer the late Chiaki Morosawa," and commented, "I hope everyone will enjoy it as a story that connects DESTINY and FREEDOM, and carries the feelings of the characters that Morosawa so badly wanted to portray."

In addition, sales of the first wave of advance ticket cards (Mubichike) begin on October 16, and a fan-vote campaign commemorating the film's release, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Series Grand Prix 2026, kicked off on October 9.

In response to the announcement, fans on social media have posted comments such as, "There was no news at all, so I was ready to wait another 20 years! This is the best, damn it!!" "I thought it would be a bit later, but it's January 2027!" "I'm as happy about Shinn being the lead as if it were my own win," "I guess Shinn's story won't really land until we see this far, so I'm just happy this film is coming out at all," and "Athrun is defeating Freedom!? Does that mean Kira isn't the one inside?"
