If you knew it was poisonous, you should have stopped me before I inhaled it... It's unfortunate yet amusing how Jinshi bursts out laughing when he hears the flower nectar is poisonous in "The Apothecary Diaries".

The way Maomao (voiced by Aoi Yuuki) naturally keeps Jinshi (voiced by Takeo Otsuka) on his toes is endearing as ever... In episode 11 of the popular anime "The Apothecary Diaries", which showcases the comical interactions between Jinshi and Maomao, Jinshi's unexpected reaction to accidentally consuming poison drew laughter from the audience.

"The Apothecary Diaries" is an anime adaptation based on the light novel of the same name by Natsu Hyuuga. The series has been adapted into manga in two monthly magazines, and the total number of copies sold has surpassed 40 million. The TV anime aired continuously for two cour starting in October 2023, gaining significant attention for its mystery elements as Maomao, who works as a poison tester in the imperial court, solves cases alongside the handsome eunuch Jinshi. The second season began airing in January 2025.

In episode 11, there's a scene where Maomao casually sips nectar from a Rhododendron vase. Seeing this, Jinshi imitates Maomao and also sips the nectar, commenting, "It's sweet!" However, Rhododendron is actually poisonous. Upon hearing Maomao casually remark, "It's poisonous, though," Jinshi involuntarily bursts out laughing. Maomao calmly reassures the coughing Jinshi, saying, "You won't die from it, so it's fine."
