In episode 19 of the anime "The Apothecary Diaries," Maomao (voiced by Aoi Yuki) not only showcases her brilliant deduction skills but also rushes to Jinshi (voiced by Takeo Otsuka) at the risk of her own life, saving him just in time. Jinshi, who usually hides behind playful antics, this time leaves the scene with a serious expression, as if deep in thought, while carrying the injured Maomao. This scene is striking for the powerful gaze of Jinshi, a stark contrast to his usual demeanor.

"The Apothecary Diaries" is an anime adaptation of the light novel series by Hyuganatsu. It has also been serialized in two monthly magazines and has surpassed 40 million copies in total circulation. The TV anime aired consecutively for two seasons starting in October 2023, and it has become a hot topic due to its engaging mystery drama featuring Maomao, who works as a "poison tester" in the imperial court, as well as the comical interactions between Maomao and Jinshi. The second season began airing in January 2025.

Maomao, having learned that ritual implements were stolen amidst a recent commotion, senses a strange connection between multiple incidents, including the death of the manager of the implements, prompting her to reinvestigate. She concludes that there might be an attempt on the life of a noble participating in the upcoming ritual.

The day of the ritual arrives. Maomao rushes to the venue but is naturally stopped by guards at the entrance. Determined, she convinces the guards at great personal risk, even getting hit in the process, and finally manages to rush into the venue, saving a noble just in time from a falling pillar.
