The third official interview for ‘Jujutsu Kaisen: The Movie Compilation - Hidden Inventory / Premature Death,’ which premieres on May 30, features Takahiro Sakurai, who voices Suguru Geto.

‘Jujutsu Kaisen,’ a manga series created by Gege Akutami, has surpassed 100 million copies in total circulation. The first season of the TV anime, the film ‘Jujutsu Kaisen 0,’ and the second season “Hidden Inventory / Premature Death / Shibuya Incident” have all gained widespread attention. The announcement for the adaptation of the next arc, “Culling Game,” has further heightened excitement for the series.

In the interview, Sakurai discusses his impressions of playing the complex character of Suguru Geto, shares his thoughts on the visuals including those from the TV series, and recalls episodes from the recording sessions. He also expresses his feelings towards the character of Geto, whom he describes as “the character I can empathize with the most among all of them.”

Zoom in

—In the stories of Season 1 and Season 2 of the TV anime, we see major changes in both the character of Geto and his relationship with Gojo. How did you feel about these changes when you first encountered the story of “Hidden Inventory / Premature Death”?

Since I encountered the story after recording for the first season, I inevitably viewed Geto as “the character I am to portray,” which made me think, “This is going to be a difficult role.” However, even for the first season and the movie, there was some very thought-provoking direction, so I was already aware of Geto’s complexity. Given that, the depiction of his past in “Hidden Inventory / Premature Death” made the process of ‘stripping away’ layers a fun experience during recording. Personally, I think it was quite fortunate to do the dubbing in this order. Having seen how the character turns out, and then portraying his past, allowed me to connect more deeply with him.

—You mentioned that the “process of stripping away was fun.” Were there any particular scenes you found enjoyable or interesting while playing Geto, or any parts that were especially challenging?

For me, it was the scenes that correspond to episode 1 of Season 2 of the TV anime. I really enjoyed the moments where Geto banters with Gojo or advises him over the phone not to use “ore” as his first-person pronoun when they go to pick up Riko-chan, as they offered glimpses into their relationship. In fact, those everyday conversations were unexpectedly difficult. Especially in “Hidden Inventory / Premature Death,” I didn’t want the daily conversations to feel “special.” Trying to express them as “ordinary” as possible was a very subtle task, but also extremely difficult.
