Closing in on Jinshi’s True Identity… But Maomao Gives Up on the Idea—“You thought that far!?” “She just dropped it lol”—Anime “The Apothecary Diaries” Episode 44

In episode 44 of the anime “The Apothecary Diaries,” which began airing sequentially from May 30th, Maomao (voiced by Aoi Yūki) appears to be on the verge of discovering Jinshi’s (voiced by Takeo Ōtsuka) true identity, but gives up thinking about it. Viewers were quick to comment, “She was so close to the answer,” as reactions poured in.

In episode 44, “Fortress,” it is revealed that Shisui (voiced by Asami Seto) is actually Consort Loulan. Suirei (voiced by Kaori Nazuka) is Shisui’s half-sister, and their father is the influential Grand Chancellor Shishou (voiced by Chō).

Maomao theorizes that the incident where Jinshi was attacked by Feifa in the past may have been orchestrated by Shishou. She speculates that Jinshi was targeted because he was attempting to change the way the rear palace was run, going against Shishou’s interests, but she wonders, “But is that all there is to it?”

Maomao has deduced that Jinshi is “someone who is merely pretending to be a eunuch.” She questions Suirei, who also infiltrated the rear palace disguised as a eunuch, asking, “When you entered the rear palace pretending to be a eunuch, how were you examined?” Suirei replies that she was physically examined by several people, and says it would be difficult for a man who had not been castrated to fool them.
