A Mix of Confusion, Tears, and Smiles for About Seven Seconds... Loulan Consort Responds to Maomao Calling Her “Shisui” — “Tearjerker” and “Godlike Animation” Reactions Flood in After Episode 45 of “The Apothecary Diaries”

In episode 45 of the anime “The Apothecary Diaries,” which began airing sequentially from June 6, viewers were deeply moved by the delicate depiction of the changing expressions of Loulan Consort (voiced by Asami Seto) when she was called “Shisui” by Maomao (voiced by Aoi Yūki). Many commented online about being touched, saying things like, “Her smile was just too heartbreaking,” and “I couldn’t stop crying.”

In the previous episode, number 44, it was revealed that the cheerful palace maid who was close to Maomao, Shisui, was in fact none other than Loulan Consort, one of the senior consorts. Moreover, suspicions arose that Loulan Consort’s father, Shishou (voiced by Chō), was plotting a rebellion, prompting Jinshi (voiced by Takeo Ōtsuka) and his group to begin moving to eliminate Shishou.

In the following episode 45, titled “The Toad Tray,” the subjugation army was drawing closer to the fortress where Shishou and the others were located. Loulan Consort then instructed the people in the fortress, “The subjugation army will attack soon. This fortress will become a battlefield and will surely fall. Escape before that happens!” Maomao urged Loulan Consort to flee the fortress with her, but received the reply, “I will not go. There are still things I must do…”

Afterward, Maomao hesitated over how to address Loulan Consort, but recalling all the days she had spent with Shisui, chose to call her “Shisui.” Loulan Consort’s expression turned to surprise, and for a brief moment she shed a tear, then showed a smile just like Shisui, saying, “What is it?”
