The story is a mystery-solving entertainment set in the imperial court, following Maomao, the apothecary’s daughter with an obsessive interest in poisons and medicines, as well as the enigmatic and handsome eunuch Jinshi, as they take on the baffling incidents that arise within the palace.

Under orders from Shenmei, Maomao spends her days concocting an elixir of immortality. One day, Kyou-u devises a plan to help Maomao escape, but is quickly discovered by the guards. Suirei, alerted by the commotion, intervenes and manages to smooth things over, bringing a sense of relief—until Shenmei suddenly appears and changes the atmosphere entirely. Angered by Shenmei’s enjoyment in deciding which of Maomao, Kyou-u, Suirei, and the guards to torment, Maomao ends up blurting out something unexpected. Enraged, Shenmei orders that Maomao be taken to the torture room.
