While there is the difference of whether it was a Gundam or a flesh-and-blood body, the “salute bazooka” scene, newly depicted in the Reiwa era, caused an explosion of excitement online: “I never imagined they’d even replicate the MS-sized salute,” “In the original, Char fired the bazooka as a human, but seeing the red Gundam do it the same way sent chills down my spine!!”, and “I can’t believe they even paid homage to the salute before firing.”

“Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX” is the latest installment in the “Mobile Suit Gundam” series, which started in 1979. The story follows high school girl Amate Yuzuriha (voiced by Tomoyo Kurosawa), who lives peacefully in a space colony, but gets drawn into the illegal mobile suit dueling sport known as “Clan Battle” after meeting a girl named Nyaan (voiced by Yui Ishikawa). Jointly produced by Studio Khara, known for works such as the “Rebuild of Evangelion” series, and Sunrise, it created a buzz upon theatrical release ahead of the TV series this January, recording a box office hit of around 3.4 billion yen. The film is currently being re-screened in 368 theaters nationwide as of June 20.
