The horror anime “The Summer Hikaru Died” began airing episode 3 sequentially from July 19. In a scene where the non-human Hikaru (voiced by Shūichirō Umeda) attacks his childhood friend Yoshiki Tsujinaka (voiced by Chiaki Kobayashi) purely out of emotion, viewers were shocked, with reactions such as, “No, this can’t be,” and, “This is 20,000 times more horrifying than I imagined!”

Yoshiki’s best friend, Hikaru Indou, was replaced by “something else” from a certain day forward. Tormented by the struggle, Yoshiki tries to accept this new “Hikaru,” even though he is different from his true friend. In episode 3, “Rejection,” Yoshiki and Hikaru get into a heated argument in their classroom. Clinging to Yoshiki, Hikaru pleads, “Hey, am I really not good enough for you?” Yoshiki loses control and says what he has been suppressing, “You look, sound, and speak just like Hikaru, but you’re not him!”

After weakly apologizing, “Sorry, you’re right, of course that’s how it is,” Hikaru breaks down, wailing, “But I can’t be without you, Yoshiki. Even knowing this, I can’t stop loving you…!” Suddenly, something viscous and unidentifiable gushes out from within Hikaru’s body. Yoshiki is pushed down by Hikaru, and the ooze enters his mouth and nose, sending him into a panic.
