“The Summer Hikaru Died” is based on the popular manga by Mokumokuren, which has surpassed 3.5 million copies in total circulation. It is a coming-of-age horror story centered around Yoshiki, a high school boy, and the “something” that has taken on the form of his best friend Hikaru.

[Synopsis]
Seeing Hikaru innocently eating watermelon, Yoshiki is reminded of “Hikaru.” Though “Hikaru” is gone, can he be forgiven for being the only one left to enjoy “everyday life”…? Unaware of Yoshiki’s inner turmoil, Hikaru conveys his pure feelings, saying, “Just being with you makes me happy.” Unable to take it anymore, Yoshiki reaches out to Rie Kurebayashi, a housewife he met at the supermarket.
