Aura Left “Powerless” After Frieren’s “Magic Release”? Her Sword Limp and Despair on Her Face: “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End”

A highly popular battle against “Guillotine Aura” (voiced by Ayana Taketatsu) is depicted in episode 10 of the anime “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End.” An iconic line, “Aura, take your own life,” is featured in this episode. Another highlight is the scene where Frieren (voiced by Atsumi Tanezaki) unleashes her true power by lifting the restriction on her magic.

Aura is a powerful demon and one of the “Seven Sages of Destruction” who serve directly under the Demon King. She wields the “Spell of Submission (Azelluse),” which allows her to place the souls of herself and her opponent on the “Scales of Obedience,” with the one possessing greater magical power gaining control over the other. Having lived for more than 500 years, this spell has served as Aura’s virtual trump card, allowing her to command soldiers she’s defeated in the past, earning her the fearsome title of “Guillotine Aura.”

On the other hand, episode 10 also delves into Frieren’s past. Despite her overwhelming magic, she could only fight demons head-on and once faced a life-threatening situation. At that time, she was saved by the great mage Flamme (voiced by Atsuko Tanaka) and became her apprentice, learning to control the release of her magic power. Since then, Frieren devoted many years to mastering the art of suppressing her magic power to the point that even its fluctuations became undetectable, in order to mislead demon adversaries.

When Aura places both her own and Frieren’s souls onto the scales, they tip in Frieren’s favor. To the shaken Aura, Frieren declares, “Standing before you is a mage who has lived for over a thousand years,” and then releases her magical restraints. In an instant, the overwhelming magical power, previously hidden, fills the surroundings. Frieren commands the shocked Aura, “Aura, take your own life.”
