The “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba” anime series is based on the manga of the same name by Koyoharu Gotoge, originally serialized in “Weekly Shonen Jump” from 2016 to 2020. Set in the Taisho era, the story follows a boy named Tanjirō Kamado (voiced by Natsuki Hanae), who fights after his family is slaughtered by demons.
The TV anime began airing in April 2019 with “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Tanjiro Kamado, Unwavering Resolve Arc,” which quickly became a sensation. Its sequel, the film “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train,” exceeded 50 billion yen in worldwide box office revenue. The manga’s cumulative circulation has now reached 220 million copies worldwide, making it a record-breaking hit in the history of Japanese manga and anime.
Following the “Unwavering Resolve Arc,” the TV anime has continued with the “Entertainment District Arc,” “Swordsmith Village Arc,” and “Hashira Training Arc.” The final episodes, to be adapted as “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle Arc” in a trilogy, have also been announced. “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle: Part 1 – Akaza Returns,” released in Japan on July 18, 2025, has grossed over 34 billion yen in 66 days. The film’s overseas release is underway, and by September 22, the total worldwide box office revenue, including Japan, has surpassed 82.3 billion yen.
