The popular manga WIND BREAKER, which began serialization in Magazine Pocket in 2021 and surpassed 10 million copies in worldwide circulation in just four years, has been adapted into a live-action film. The movie WIND BREAKER, currently showing nationwide since December 5th (Friday), depicts the conflict between the members of Bōfūrin, led by the delinquent protagonist Haruka Sakura, and the Shishitōren gang, led by Chōji Tōmiyama, through powerful action sequences.
In this article, we deliver an interview with Noritaka Hamada, who plays Jō Togame, the second-in-command of the Shishitōren gang, focusing on what he prioritized when expressing the action scenes and the subtle nuances of emotion.
——The action scenes in this film offer many highlights, and Jō Togame's action sequences, especially those involving geta (wooden clogs), were particularly impressive.
Hamao:This was my first time working on a production with such intense action scenes, and regarding the geta action specifically, I wanted to minimize anything that would distract me or prevent me from concentrating on the acting.
I practiced the most to ensure that my focus wouldn't be drawn away by the action itself or the fact that I was wearing geta. I also wore the geta constantly in my daily life, provided it was appropriate for the time, place, and occasion.
——So you made an effort not to be conscious of wearing the geta.
Hamao:I believe I did everything I possibly could. Having said that, I still feel there are many areas where I am lacking and immature.
——I believe that, among all the characters in this film, Jō Togame is the one whose image changes the most between his first appearance and the end of the viewing.
Hamao:That's right. Everything about him changes as his relationship with Sakura evolves. I believe, and I made an effort to ensure, that the subtle shifts in emotion characteristic of a live-action adaptation are present, so I definitely hope viewers pay attention to that.
