"This phrasing doesn't feel very Kamui-ish": What was Satoshi Hino's challenge during the dubbing session? 【"Shin-Gekijōban Gintama: Yoshiwara Daienjō" Interview】

"Shin-Gekijōban Gintama: Yoshiwara Daienjō," the latest installment in the popular anime series "Gintama," has been in theaters since Friday, February 13th. Set in the underground pleasure district, Yoshiwara Paradise, the film depicts the familial love and bonds between a young boy named Seita and Hinowa, whom Seita believes might be his mother. With a story woven by Gintoki Sakata and the rest of Yorozuya crew—blending comedy and serious drama—fan acclaim continues to soar.

In this article, we interviewed voice actor Satoshi Hino, who plays the rival character and key to the story, Kamui. We spoke with him primarily about his impressions of the recording process.

—How do you feel now that you've finished the dubbing? Rie Kugimiya (who plays Kagura) commented that it was a "non-stop recording over just a few days" and that she "gave it her absolute all," which suggests it was quite an intense experience.

Hino: My personal recording for "Yoshiwara in Flames" only took one day, but even so, I recorded for the full day... For my part, I made physical adjustments regarding Kamui’s expression and how to project my voice. Since Kamui can be quite aloof, I approached the acting on-site with a bit of a relaxed vibe—rather than tackling it with 100% brute force, it was more of a "deflecting" stance.

—By the way, who did you record with?

Hino: During my session, I was with Daisuke Sakaguchi-san (Shinpachi Shimura), Rie Kugimiya-chan, Hochu Otsuka-san (Abuto), as well as my junior from the same agency, Yuko Sanpei-san (Seita), and Kikuko Inoue-san (Hinowa).

—I believe there were quite a few scenes, did you really record all of those in one day?

Hino: Well, compared to Yorozuya trio, it wasn't that much. It felt more like appearing at key "pivot points" throughout the film.
