A celebratory illustration for Frieren: Beyond Journey's End by the legendary Rumiko Takahashi—author of iconic hits like Urusei Yatsura, Inuyasha, and MAO—has been released on the series' official X (formerly Twitter) account, becoming a hot topic among fans.
The newly unveiled illustration depicts a peaceful moment from everyday life: Frieren dozing off with her eyes closed while Fern meticulously brushes her long hair. Fern mutters, "She's asleep..." with a slightly exasperated look. Accompanied by the message "Congratulations on Anime Season 2!" and Takahashi's signature, the piece captures the artist's signature charm, from the soft, rounded eyes to the characters' expressive faces.
Fans were quick to shower the illustration with praise for its high quality and the legend’s unique touch, leaving comments such as: "It's so cute, and wow, a total legend drew this!", "The 'resolution' of Fern is incredible!", and "It’s amazing how you can tell it’s Takahashi-sensei’s work just by looking at Fern's eyes."
The excitement escalated as fans began imagining the Frieren world infused with the classic tropes of the "Rumic World." Comments like "I can easily imagine the 'Kapon~' sound effect in a hot spring scene" and "I can practically see Stark getting blown away with a 'Chudoon!' (Kaboom!)" showed how much fans enjoyed blending the two universes.
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, based on the manga by Kanehito Yamada (story) and Tsukasa Abe (art), follows the mage Frieren, a member of the hero party that defeated the Demon King. After the death of one of her former companions, she embarks on a new journey to understand the hearts of humans. On March 27th, the same day the illustration was released, the final episode of Season 2 aired, followed by the announcement that Season 3 is set to broadcast in October 2027.
Meanwhile, MAO is Takahashi’s latest dark fantasy series following Nanoka Kiba, a girl who miraculously survived a past accident, and Mao, an Onmyoji boy. Set in the Taisho era where monsters roam, they tackle mysterious occult cases. The MAO anime is set to begin its consecutive two-cour broadcast on April 4th.
