One of the charms of the anime Frieren: Beyond Journey's End is its playful "anime-original" additions that expand upon the source material. In Episode 18, a "way over-the-top birthday cake" had viewers cracking up.
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, currently available for binge-watching, is based on the manga written by Kanehito Yamada and illustrated by Tsukasa Abe, serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday. Set in the world after the Demon King has been defeated, it tells the story of Frieren (CV: Atsumi Tanezaki), an elven mage who has lived for over a thousand years, as she embarks on a "journey to understand people."
The original manga, which has surpassed 35 million copies in circulation, has won numerous accolades, including the Manga Taisho 2021, the 25th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize (New Creator Prize), the 69th (2023) Shogakukan Manga Award, and the 48th Kodansha Manga Award for the Shonen category. The first season of the TV anime aired starting in September 2023, followed by the second season in January 2026. It has also been announced that the third season, Golden Land Arc, will begin broadcasting in October 2027.
Episode 18 depicted the days of training leading up to the First-Class Mage Exam. In one scene, Fern (CV: Kana Ichinose) and Stark (CV: Chiaki Kobayashi) celebrate Frieren's birthday, preparing a massive whole cake for their modest little party.
