"The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" Surges Past 5.4 Billion Yen in Japan! Global Box Office Surpasses 138.8 Billion Yen to Become 2026's No. 1 Western Film

"The Super Mario Galaxy Movie," which opened nationwide on Friday, April 24, 2026, has become a record-breaking hit in both the Japanese and global markets.

This film is the second installment in the series following "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," which recorded a global box office gross of over $1.3 billion (approx. 200 billion yen) in 2023. Co-produced by Chris Meledandri of Illumination and Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo, the film was produced through a joint investment by Universal Pictures and Nintendo.

Domestically, the film earned 1,172,485,030 yen over the three-day weekend from Friday, May 1, to Sunday, May 3, during the Golden Week holidays, securing the No. 1 spot in the weekend mobilization rankings for two consecutive weeks. With audiences flocking to theaters throughout the holidays, the cumulative box office gross reached 5,406,211,110 yen by Wednesday, May 6, quickly surpassing the 5 billion yen milestone. This performance continues to break records for Western films released in the 2026 fiscal year.

The film is also showing overwhelming strength in overseas markets. In North America, it earned $12,104,010 (approx. 1.89 billion yen) over its fifth weekend, bringing its cumulative domestic total to over $404,245,175 (approx. 63.12 billion yen). Globally, the cumulative box office has reached $889,293,509 (approx. 138.86 billion yen), a massive hit on the verge of reaching the $900 million mark (preliminary figures as of May 7, per Box Office Mojo).

Carrying on the momentum of its predecessor, the film is taking the world by storm. Expectations are high for further record-breaking milestones in Japan.
