Episode 71 of the anime "Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-" 4th Season has been airing since May 6. The past of Typhon (CV: Misaki Kuno), the "Witch of Pride"—who is said to have judged sinners with a mixture of childhood innocence and ruthlessness—was revealed, leading to a wave of shocked reactions from viewers, with many calling the content "brutal" and "pure madness."
In Episode 71, "Stick Swinger," Subaru Natsuki (CV: Yūsuke Kobayashi) and his companions stepped into the library within the Pleiades Watchtower. Each of the countless volumes in the collection is titled with a person's name. When Subaru touched one of the books, he experienced the past of that individual firsthand.
A young girl named Typhon, raised by her father who was an executioner, struggled to find an answer to the nature of good and evil. However, triggered by a certain event, she realized: "The scales that measure the sins committed lie within none other than the heart of the sinner themselves."
Typhon then approached a man on the verge of execution and asked, "Did you do something bad? Are you a bad person?" The next moment, the man's body shattered into pieces. Typhon proceeded to ask the same question to bystanders and even her own father, shattering them one after another. After taking many lives, she left the scene with a satisfied smile on her face.
This appears to be the past of Typhon, the "Witch of Pride." As her character—which Subaru described as "the personification of the phrase 'the cruelty of innocence'"—came to light, the internet exploded with screams: "The content is so messed up..." "Seeing her not care at all when her father crumbled felt like madness," and "It's so cruel it actually hurts to watch... regardless, she's an incredibly terrifying child." Additionally, some pointed out the nature of the book Subaru happened to pick up, questioning, "Can we really write it off as mere coincidence that the book he touched by chance belonged to a Witch?"
