SEKIRO: NO DEFEAT, an anime based on FromSoftware’s action-adventure game SEKIRO: SHADOWS DIE TWICE, is set for a three-week limited theatrical release in Japan starting September 4, 2026. Along with this announcement, the main theatrical visual has been unveiled.
The visual, featuring the catchphrase "Together. To live, and to die," depicts the ongoing journey of the master and servant with nowhere to belong amidst the falling snow. The film is produced entirely in hand-drawn 2D animation by studio Qzil.la, with KADOKAWA and ARCH handling production and producing duties, respectively. The film is rated [PG12].
Furthermore, the film has been selected for the Midnight Specials category—a section dedicated to experimental and cutting-edge works—at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival 2026. With its refined swordplay and meticulous visual beauty, the film aims to bring the story of SEKIRO to the global stage.
Ryuichi Sakamoto’s "Blu" Selected as Theme Song
The track "Blu" by the late composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, who passed away in March 2023, will be featured as the theme song. Sakamoto made his solo debut in 1978 and joined YMO that same year. In film music, he established global acclaim with a BAFTA for Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence and an Academy Award for Best Original Score for The Last Emperor. In his later years, he continued contributing to social causes and the art world, including the founding of "more trees" and the Tohoku Youth Orchestra.
