The anime "Akane-banashi" is based on the popular manga currently serialized in "Weekly Shonen Jump" (Shueisha), created by Yuki Suenaga (story) and Takamasa Moue (art). The story's protagonist is Akane, who has been fascinated by rakugo since childhood, watching the back of her father, Tōru Ōsaki (CV: Jun Fukuyama), also known as the rakugoka "Shinta Arakawa." After witnessing a shocking incident during her father's crucial performance for his promotion to shin'uchi, Akane begins her fierce journey toward reaching shin'uchi, the highest rank in the rakugo world.

The day of the Karaku Cup preliminaries has finally arrived. This year's highlights are Karashi Nerimaya, a university student on a two-consecutive-win streak at the Karaku Cup, and Hikaru Kōragi, a rapidly rising popular young voice actress. Meanwhile, Kaisei, who serves as the master of ceremonies, recommends the unknown high school girl "Akane" to reporters as a top contender for the championship. At the venue, Koguma, Guriko, and Iwashimizu are also present to watch over Akane. Going up against formidable rivals, will Akane be able to clear the preliminaries with her "Jugemu"?
