In 2026, the 30th anniversary year of Sakura Wars, it has been decided that a new stage play will be performed for the first time in about five years since the previous production.
The Sakura Wars series is a dramatic adventure game franchise released by Sega, encompassing media mix works such as anime and stage plays based on the original game. Set in a fictional "Taisho era," the story depicts young girls active as an opera troupe who board robots powered by spiritual energy to protect world peace.
Shifting the setting from the Imperial Capital of Tokyo to the sorcery city of Kyoto, Project Sakura Wars the Stage ~Seiden TSURUGI~—another story woven with an original script that can only be seen in this production—will feature Sakura Amamiya, who has led numerous battles to victory, and five new characters appearing for the first time. A total of 15 performances are scheduled from September 18 to 27, with advance ticket applications opening on May 29 at 6:00 PM.
The original creator of the series is Ouji Hiroi, with music by Kohei Tanaka, who handles the music for the Sakura Wars series. The script and direction are by Tomoharu Suzuki, choreography by Keiko Matsumoto, vocal coaching by Yuko, and stage combat by Yasuhiro Roppongi.
Furthermore, six main cast members, including the five highly anticipated new cast members for this production, have been unveiled: Asagi Todo, the only daughter of the Todo family—one of the three underground families—who is widely renowned as a sword-fighting weapon to vanquish evil lurking in the city of Kyoto, will be played by Yuuri Ota; Shirahime Okita, the daughter of the prestigious Okita family of ancient Kyoto origins, who has a strong-willed personality and is always accompanied by a personal guard, will be played by Haruki Iwata; and Hagane Hijikata, a doctor at the Hijikata Clinic who has a foul mouth and attitude but possesses top-tier medical skills and is loved by the people of Arashiyama, will be played by Chihaya Yoshitake.
Additionally, Zuying He, a member of the Shanghai Combat Revue whose age is unknown but who possesses broad, sage-like insights despite her young appearance, will be played by Momoyo Koyama; Juri Sawada, a highly capable, energetic journalist who causes confusion around her by taking photos that seem impossible to capture, will be played by Uta Kawase; and Sakura Amamiya, a member of the Imperial Combat Revue's Flower Division who has led numerous battles to victory and heads to Arashiyama in this production to investigate a certain incident that occurred in Kyoto, will be played by Yuna Sekine, reprising her role from the previous production, bringing to life a dream collaboration that will delight fans.
The story is set in the early summer of 1941. Under the orders of Sumire Kanzaki, Sakura Amamiya heads to Kyoto to stop a "threat that menaces all of Japan." Meanwhile, in Kyoto, a series of sword-stealing incidents known as "Katana-gari" (Sword Hunts) were occurring frequently. At such a time, Sakura encounters a young girl pursuing her stolen sword. Carrying shining blue twin swords, the girl's name is Asagi Todo, a descendant of the Todo family, one of the three underground families. The meeting of these two raises the curtain on a new stage. With the battle between the "Arashiyama Iroha-gumi" and the "Roushi" about to begin in the sorcery city of Kyoto, a new story woven by the six girls—Asagi, Shirahime, Hagane, Zuying, Juri, and Sakura—begins to unfold.
The promotional video, unveiled along with the key visual, features the theme song "Makoto no Tsurugi" (Sword of Sincerity), newly written for this stage play by Tanaka, who handles the music for the Sakura Wars series. Sung by the lead, Ota, the song plays as the cast members portraying each character appear amidst fluttering cherry blossoms, depicting a dynamic and dramatic world.
Unlike previous stage plays, this production features a theatrical segment where audience members can enjoy the worldview of Project Sakura Wars woven into a brand-new story, as well as a live musical performance segment in every show.
