"Nontan," the beloved picture book character created in 1976 by author Sachiko Kiyono, celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2026. To mark the occasion, the production of a new anime was announced on July 11, alongside newly unveiled visuals rendered in the latest 3DCG.

Since its debut, the "Nontan" series has sold over 35 million copies and remains a timeless bestseller cherished across generations. In the newly announced anime, Nontan is reborn through cutting-edge 3DCG technology while retaining all the warmth and charm of the original. The unveiled visuals show a new, three-dimensional Nontan peeking into view alongside the familiar character Hachi-san.

In addition, an immersive commemorative exhibition celebrating the 50th anniversary will open on July 18. The exhibition follows an original story built around three keywords—"Inside Nontan's Dreams," "Celebrating Nontan," and "Playing with Nontan"—allowing visitors to experience Nontan's world through video works and three-dimensional installations. Around 50 vividly colored original picture book illustrations and rough sketches will also be on display, offering a look at the creative journey of Sachiko Kiyono.
